Market Drugs Medical's history is founded in the early 1900's, the earliest days of pharmacy practice in Alberta. One of these historical pharmacies, Archibald's Drugs, was acquired by Borys Ferbey and sister Lillian Ewasiuk of Edmonton in the mid 1960's. From these roots they created a new business, Market Drugs Ltd. across from the Edmonton City Market Square. Lillian also moved her late husband Nick's Union Drugs from the Union Professional Building into the new location occupied by Market Drugs Ltd.
The synergy between the old entities and the newly created Market Drugs Ltd. was dynamic. Market Drugs quickly became an integral part of the bustling Market Square community by offering a range of products from medical-surgical human health products to the veterinary products inherited from Archibald Drugs.
As the company established itself, Borys Ferbey continued to expand the business. His keen interest in developing new departments within his store led to the decision to take the medical-surgical business to a new level. In 1981 he took over the next bay of the Wentworth Building in downtown Edmonton and created a new entity known as "Edmonton Surgical and Ostomy Supply". The new department began developing quickly as the family and employees worked hard to solidify their place in the new niche. During sales calls representatives of the new business were welcomed warmly, however, after identifying the ownership of "Edmonton Surgical and Ostomy Supply", clients continued to call the new business by its founding company, namely, "Market Drugs". In response to the wonderful brand recognition and reputation Market Drugs had, the Ferbey family renamed the company Market Drugs Medical. Now the name would truly reflect what Market Drugs and Edmonton Surgical and Ostomy Supply could not on their own: that the business was both a pharmacy and medical supply company.
Throughout the rest of the 1980's and early 1990's Market Drugs Medical forged ahead with new and innovative products and programs. In 1992, son Mark and daughter-in-law Lorraine Ferbey, purchased the company from Borys and Gloria Ferbey. Although they had both worked in the business since the early 1980's they brought new energy and enthusiasm to a well respected and successful business. They planned and executed the implementation of new technology and continued to refine the product groups within the business. This fine-tuning eliminated the concept of Market Drugs Medical as a traditional pharmacy and by the late 1990's the company was transformed into a new category of pharmacy and medical supplier-pharma-medical company.
In 1998 Market Drugs Medical further developed the medical products department by acquiring Edith Foran Shops, creating the new service of fitting women with Breast Forms following Mastectomy surgery. Today, the Edith Foran entity is a core part of our business and is now referred to as Market Drugs Medical Women's Health.
In 2002, Market Drugs Medical hired Ron Marcinkoski as the new Compounding Pharmacist. Ron joined Pharmacy Manager James Wu, who had been operating and supervising the Pharmacy department since 1982. Together, James and Ron, rededicated their professional interests and talents and began the compounding of custom pharmaceuticals and sterile IV products. Market Drugs Medical now provides compounds to Physicians and Patients throughout Alberta.
2005 marked Market Drugs Medical's 40th Anniversary. In light of this auspicious year we have rebranded the Market Drugs Medical image to reflect the evolution and reality of what the company has become.
